You have your space, they have their space, and then there's the common space. Each of these realms should be respected. This is what freedom and governance work with. We work with the individual, and the collective. My space involves my expression. Your space involves your expression. The common space is where the two shall meet.
My art, as I mentioned in the last entry, is about my expression. It isn't about your expression, and it sure isn't going to be stifled by your will. I wouldn't want to stifle your expression. I hope that my expression is appealing, and communicates a way to be. I don't have all of the answers. No human being does. We have our own approximations that communicate some gesture of an ideology. My aesthetic comes from the influences in my youth. Everything from the art of Stephen Gammell (Scary Stories), to Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butthead", to Picasso's blue period all live in my soul. I love Hemingway, Bukowski, and Kerouac. I love the harsh bleak music of the Pogues, and the grounded reality of MF Doom. I love the zines that Matt Groening made while living day to day in LA. I love the Gonzo journalism of Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman (I met Steadman back in 2008 or so).
I make my art with a sense of defiance. I know my opinions are not in tune with the mainstream. I know the art world at large pushes identity politics, and seems to really only rally behind their chosen representatives of ideology. I am acutely aware of the game, because I lived in NYC, and know how this game is played. I make my work anyway, and I legitimize myself. I have a friend who is still trying to get in with the mainstream, and he has no chance of it. He isn't what they want. He would be better to do it himself, but alas, we're pack animals. We work within hierarchies, and I'm no better. I've only gotten a little wiser.
I believe in grassroots, and DIY. I believe in zines, the underground, punk, and comedy. I believe in making something that is honest. I won't compromise honesty in my expression. There wouldn't be much of a point to the art aspect. I live to make things that express my soul. I do hope to one day monetize it, and/or get more eyes on it. I have faith. I have faith in more than one way, and I have faith that I'm not totally insane. I have the belief that more people will enjoy the things I make, because I live on the same planet. I am human, and I have my space. You have your space, and this common space we share is only shared optimally when we communicate. So, here is my work. Enjoy, and spread the word to the other people.
